The Camp
The Camp in Batang Toru is located along the a river. The river provides the drinking water (which does not need to to be purified). The facilities in the camp are basic but comfortable. We have two sleeping huts (we can accommodate four persons each) and two platforms where tents can be installed. Up to 10 persons can live comfortably there. We have a working/dining room and a kitchen. We use the dead wood gathered in the forest to cook. A small generator provides one or two hours of electricity per day for the light and to charge electric equipment (computer, camera, GPS…).

Life in the camp is well organised. Two persons are on cooking duty every day, they wake up up at 4AM to start the fire and prepare the breakfast and lunch that we take in the field. Cooking starts again after coming back form the field.
Food and equipment is delivered three times a month by two porters that carry 30 kg each. The food in the camp is simple but tasty, we eat rice, vegetables, dried fish and sardine in cans, eggs, coconut milk and of course lots of chili ! Any food that can be kept at room temperature as we do not have a fridge.
